Our purpose will be to present our learnings from the 2015 Plain Talk About Reading Conference, from Douglas Fisher Ph.D. of San Diego State University. We will explain the definition of Close Reading and identify the essential components. We will demonstrate how to plan a close reading lesson: from selecting appropriate text, to framing questions at deeper levels of knowledge, all the way to gradually releasing responsibility by having students annotate text. We will address how to plan a close reading lesson with very young students: for example, where the teacher reads aloud initially and guides student annotation in an interactive way. Participants will come away from this session with a clearer idea of how to inspire kids to respond to text in new ways.
