'It's Fun to Have Fun, But You Have to Know How': The Integrated Play Groups Model LIMITED

Students with autism spectrum disordersneed specific instruction in social interactive skills to succeed in their school programs. In this presentation, the Integrated Play Groups model developed by Pamela Wofberg (2003)will be described and demonstrated. This is an inclusion model in which typical peers serve as "experts" in play, modeling and supporting the development of such skills as shared reference, perspective taking, turntaking, and symbolic thinking. Case study examples, and ideas for including Integrated Play Groups methods in existing educational programs will be presented. The program is geared toward autism, but is also appropriate for other students with social challenges.
